These Walls Are a Vise

by Tom Lucas

Eyes are slits
Painful light intruding
Head pounding confusion
Hard floor beneath my back

Ceiling fan slowly turning
Last night’s memory
Dripping down my neck
Sliding through my grasp

A vacant room trashed
My current address unknown
Spiritually off the grid
Mistakes have clearly been made

Now isolation
In a pool of bad decisions
Damaging radiation
A personal ground zero

No reason to get up now
The damage irreversible
Once was mine
Left the room some time ago

If the body is a temple
It’s time to explore the ruins.
